Symbols are in my blood. I have been using them since I started my teacher training nearly 20 years ago. I even had them at my wedding! (colleagues created symbol supported 'I DO' flashcards to augment a lost voice.)
From teaching young children with profound and multiple disabilities, to my role as a consultant for Widgit Software and now as a mother of a two small children developing their language and cognitive skills, I have always loved the challenge of finding new ways to use symbols. I have seen the effect good symbol use and practice can have on all types of learners, bringing independence, understanding and inclusion where it might otherwise have been lost.
There are so many amazing people out there creating and sharing their knowledge, experience and resources through the internet. My intention in starting up Symbol Resources was to gather and signpost to them in the hopes that doing so would help to broaden the use symbols throughout the school, home and community environments....as well as stop us all from recreating the wheel, saving precious time and energy!
